Consumers are getting tech-savvier by the minute. More than half of those mulling over the purchase of a digital photo frame say they want one that can also play back moving video. Additionally, they also covet WiFi and Internet connectivity.
"Next-generation features will play prominently in future digital photo frame purchases," says Stephanie Ethier, Analyst at In-Stat.
The survey of 1,547 respondents found that Kodak was the brand most owned by consumers, followed by Pandigital and Philips. But in terms of future interest, potential buyers are intrigued by HP and Sony models. These are the individuals that say they plan to buy a frame within the next 12 months, and are also the ones who claim that movie clip playback is their most desired feature, along with the ability to transfer photos to and from photo sharing Websites like Snapfish and Flickr.
However, Ethier cautions that manufacturers "carefully balance price and feature sets".
In other words, while consumers would like these added niceties, how much more are they willing to pay for them? A huge price differential between the basic digital photo frame that plays back photos and one with advanced functionality like video, music, and wireless connectivity, could sway consumers away from the technology altogether. But a reasonable jump will likely see them opt for the higher-tech versions.
